Homemade Cough Elixir - Onion Syrup

Don’t worry – it’s better than it sounds! Just don’t tell the kids what’s in it!
Onions are antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and immune stimulating. Honey can be a very effective at soothing sore throats and stubborn coughs. Put them together and you have a great DIY cough elixir you’ll always have ingredients for! Keep in mind honey should not be used in infants younger than 12 months. In this case, use the alternate recipe with cane sugar or coconut sugar.

Layer honey and fresh cut onion slices in a clean 1 quart jar. Make sure the onion slices are fully covered in honey. Then seal the jar tightly, and let sit at room temperature. You can start using it as early as 8 hours. Once you open the jar, store in the refrigerator and dose by the teaspoon 1-2x/hour until it’s done (this is best used fresh and within 2 days). The onion juice over time will diffuse into the honey, creating a sweet and therapeutic elixir.

An alternate recipe – same idea, just replace honey with cane sugar, approximately 1/8 cup sugar per layer.
Another variation – substitute 2 or 3 crushed garlic cloves in place of the onion
