This category of vegetables (also known as the cabbage family) contains sulforaphane, an antioxidant that has been shown to reverse the estrogen-induced changes contributing to breast cancer. In men it has been shown to prevent, delay, and reverse pre-cancerous and advanced prostate lesions. Another compound in cruciferous vegetables, indole-3-carbinol, has been investigated as an anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, and anti-oxidant in those with rheumatoid arthritis.  In her book “The Wahls Protocol” for autoimmune disease, Dr. Terry Wahls recommends 3 cups of cruciferous vegetables per day.
